So Feeny unfortunately came down with a head cold yesterday. The same one I had that was a week later accompanied with a nasty, barking like cough. She thankfully was able to have a fun weekend going on a great hike with her dogs in a pack walk with a total of 17 dogs running off leash through the fields! She had a blast and I'm thankful she managed to get some fun time in before this hit her.
With cold and coughs she is unable to take cough medicine or any cold medicine to help. Means she suffers through them. The cough started a day after the cold symptoms though and during the night last night. She didn't wake me to let me know what was going on though! She was coughing so much and then started having severe chest pain and unable to lay back flat from the pain it would cause. I woke her up in the morning to get ready for school and found her in bad shape. I still was under the impression it was the cold though with the new nasty cough. But she started really complaining of pain around the chest and unable to even stand up straight. I decided to change the bandaging around the site to check it out, she was unable to lean back at all due to the intense pain it caused :( The site looked good though, just a bit swollen in one area under the skin, like fluid build up, the tissue was good, no redness or unusual leakage...and in combination with the pain when trying to straighten up or lean back to lay down, I was starting to suspect a bile build up issue. So when I went to flush the drain I had a cup ready underneath when I uncapped it....sure enough bile gushed out quickly filling up half a cups worth! That at this point is not normal, in fact we've had no bile come out of the this drain or a bag even put on even once with this new one. So something is definitely wrong. I thankfully had a bag from before they gave me and a proper connector...the last one they gave me was the wrong bag and no connectors to attach it. So thankfully I had kept that one and so far she's drained nearly half a bag of bile out, the bags are a fair size, the length of her thigh. I had given her some of her prescription pain medication given for her nerve pain. It's codeine which helps with coughing and her pain so I gave her that to help reduce the pain and the cough making the pain so much worse. It seemed to help a bit thankfully but wore off quickly and she needed more by noon as the pain was getting too much for her to handle. I called people in edmonton, calgary and brooks, leaving msgs with all. Unfortunately our family dr is gone right now. I'm hoping calgary can help us to make the distance shorter, but I finally got a hold of someone in edmonton at noon today, so we'll see what they say our next course of action should be, just waiting for them to talk to the dr and see what he says. I suspect an ultrasound to check placement would be our first step...just as to where, calgary or edmonton for it though... Everything seems to be just like before when the drain had to be replaced after that week of nightmare pain she endured.... I hope her coughing hasn't managed to dislodge the drain in her stomach somehow and caused this all....if that's even possible. She has had some issue the last 4-5 days with her bowels which would be part of having too much bile in her stomach...but seems odd when the cough occured this would too.... Either way I just hope they figure something out soon....and she can stop suffering and won't have to endure another procedure to remove this drain and put another one in... she's so brave and strong to endure all this and to do so with such little complaint.
